Beyond the Podium: Celebrating a Housing Champion and Multifaceted Storyteller at RE:Conference

As we approach RE:Conference 2024, we're excited to shine a spotlight on two remarkable individuals participating in this year’s conference who embody the theme of renewal in their work and lives.

Representative Ricki Ruiz: Champion for Education and Housing Justice

Rep. Ricki Ruiz, serving House District 50 (Gresham and Southeast Portland), brings a passion for education and community service to the legislature. As a former school board director and current Co-chair of the Education Budget Committee, Rep. Ruiz is dedicated to ensuring equitable resource allocation for Oregon's schools.

"Over 90% of legislation that is passed in the Oregon Legislature is bipartisan," Rep. Ruiz notes, challenging the common misconception of constant political conflict. His commitment to finding common ground and building respectful relationships across the aisle is a refreshing reminder of the power of collaboration.

Rep. Ruiz's work on the Joint Task Force on Addressing Racial Disparities in Home Ownership highlights his dedication to housing justice. "We're seeing the pattern... there's still a lot to do," he says, emphasizing the ongoing need to address racial disparities in housing and homeownership.

We're honored to recognize Rep. Ruiz at RE:Conference for his championship of affordable housing and his tireless efforts to create a more equitable Oregon.

Jelani Greenidge: Communicator, Musician, and Storyteller

Jelani Greenidge describes himself as a "communicator extraordinaire" and "media renaissance guy," wearing many hats as a writer, worship leader, hip-hop producer, DJ, and stand-up comedian. His unique blend of talents promises to bring both energy and insight to RE:Conference.

Jelani's approach to storytelling is deeply rooted in authenticity and connection. "Instead of trying to be funny," he advises, "a better approach is to try to show me the funny that you discover." This philosophy extends beyond comedy to his work in writing and music, where he strives to bring people into his world and forge genuine connections.

As both a DJ and performer at RE:Conference, Jelani will bring his multifaceted talents to enliven our gathering. His perspective on the evolving landscape of racial, housing, and economic justice in Oregon is both personal and profound. From friends achieving homeownership through Habitat for Humanity to his journey with the IDA program, Jelani's experiences underscore the real-world impact of the work we do.
